HughesNet Installation

A HughesNet Satellite Internet system requires professional installation, per FCC regulations. A misaligned HughesNet Satellite Dish can interfere with other networks using the same satellite. Even if your service works, you may be affecting others.


A HughesNet standard installation includes:

  • Up to 125' of coax for each cable run.
  • Mounting of the dish to a wall or roof using supplied hardware.
  • Grounding of the system to NEC and local codes.
  • Routing of cable through one exterior wall or up through basement.
  • Commissioning the HughesNet account.
  • Up to 20 minutes work to solve any problems with customers computer.

Should the customer need additional help, HughesNet customer service will provide required telephone support with customer or for a service fee the install technician may be for hired to solve any computer issues.


The Installation outline above is what the average consumer can expect from most HughesNet Installers. if you think your installation may exceed a standard installation, thus requiring custom work, you may wish to contact a local dealer and(or) technician for advice BEFORE you sign up. Not all HughesNet dealers are the same. Some use their own "in-house" technicians and others use nation contracting networks. The National Networks are fine for many consumers, however, we feel a local dealer/ technician provided a better installation. They make sure you get the right installation to meet your needs.


Ground Post Installs

Direcway Ground Post

For ground installs a post can be set in concrete to provide a stable mounting platform. The post should meet minimum specifications.

  • Set 3 feet in ground
  • Secured with a minimum of 120lbs of concrete
  • Dish bottom must be 5' above the ground
  • Post must be 2" Sch40 steel pipe (not fence corner post)
  • Have Anti-twist rod through pipe and in concrete.
  • Transmitter / Mast grounded to building ground
  • If a ground rod is installed, rod must be bonded to building ground.

Ground post install cost can vary depending on cable burial length and ground conditions but an average cost around $150 plus cable bury is common.



Editors Note: Because some installers were telling consumers they needed a ground pole when they did not so they could charge customers extra for the pole installation, HughesNet decided to to start advertising free ground pole installations. They pay the retailers a small increase for each installation which is supposed to cover the cost for those installations that require a ground pole. In some parts of the country ground poles are more common than not, due to trees.

Dealers should be allowed to charge for all non-standard work. The small amount HughesNet reimburses dealers is not enough to cover the actual expense for many dealers. Hughesnet only created the free ground pole mount installation policy to stop hack installers for ripping off consumers. I would have hired better installers, but HughesNet went a different direction.



It is critical that any cable in direct contact with the ground be of a Flooded design. The normal coax cable used for satellite TV, satellite Internet and even cable TV, is NOT for use when directly buried. A true direct burial cable has a sticky compound just under the jacket. This "flooding" compound is intended to protect the cable from water migration. If not using flooded cable, your installer must place all coax inside conduit when the cable is in the ground and for at least 12 inches above ground. This protects the cable from weed eaters and lawn mowers.
